Finally, Bush descended to Vietnam-speak. This is the language used by the Johnson and Nixon administrations to obscure the truth by emitting a fog of numbers. Thus Bush cited the "8 million Iraqi men and women" who voted, the "30 nations" with troops in Iraq (a total joke, and the president knows it), the "40 countries" and "three international organizations" that have pledged "$34 billion" in reconstruction assistance (another joke)...

Kozo, you are my hero

A 95-year-old Japanese man has slashed the world 100 metres sprint record for men aged 95-99, clocking 22.04 seconds. Kozo Haraguchi, who only took up running aged 65, was the only person in his race in the southern city of Miyazaki.

He took almost two seconds off the previous record in this age group, which stood at 24.01.

Mr Haraguchi said that it was the first time he had raced in the rain, and he was concentrating hard on not slipping.

Mr Haraguchi also holds the world record for the same distance in the 90-94 age range, of 18.08 seconds.

He said the secret of his success was taking an hour-long daily walk around his neighbourhood.

I have the highest respect for these aid workers who operate in such difficult environments like Afghanistan and Iraq. Clementina Cantoni, who runs the program "Humanitarian Assistance for the Women of Afghanistan" for CARE, was abducted three weeks ago. Now, she has been finally freed.

Deep Throat and Toilet Paper

Felt (Deep Throat) said that after he had his law degree his first job had been with the Federal Trade Commission. His first assignment was to determine whether toilet paper with the brand name Red Cross was at an unfair competitive advantage because people thought it was endorsed or approved by the American Red Cross. The FTC was a classic federal bureaucracy -- slow and leaden -- and he hated it. Within a year he had applied to the FBI and been accepted. Law school opened the most doors, he seemed to be saying, but don't get caught in your own equivalent of a toilet-paper investigation.

I have always suspected that too much knowledge is a dangerous thing. It is a boon to people who don't have deep feelings; their pleasure comes from what they know about things, and their pride from showing off what they know. But this only emphasizes the difference between the artist and the scholar.
